A preliminary sample was collected by Twentymile Coal Company (TCC)
personnel in May and analyzed for a standard set of parameters used at other discharge points under TCC's
NPDES permit No. CO-0027154 (see attached laboratory report). In July 2006, Twentymile Coal contacted Mr.
Chris Gates of CDPHE regarding this site and later submitted a Construction Dewatering -Wastewater Discharge
Application, which was subsequently approved (Outfall 001A under CO-G072272). A copy of a July 11, 2006
request letter from Mr. Nettleton of TCC to Mr. Gates is also attached. Mr. Gates also requested preliminary
analyses of this water for alkalinity, COD, pH and TDS. A sample was collected and analyzed for these
parameters (see attached laboratory report).
A discharge channel was constructed in late July, and weekly monitoring of discharge from outfall 001 A began in
August. Note that water has been pumped from the sedimentation pond through 001A on an as needed/ sporadic
basis. Flows are estimated. Pre-printed DMRs (July 2006 and August 2006) for Outtall 001A (a.k.a. TCC Site
6NM) were received by myself the week of September 11th.
Enclosed please find completed DMR forms for both July and August 2006. Outfall 001A was recorded as flowing
for two weeks out of the month. Two exceedances (30 day average and 7 day max) were obtained for total
suspended solids (TSS). The first sample in the month exhibited a value of 14 mg/I, while the second exhibited a
value of 94 mg/I. This may have resulted from the pump system agitating the water from the sedimentation pond
during low water. The system will be examined and adjusted accordingly.
Please contact me directly at (970) 870-2750 with any questions.
Twentymile/Coal Company
Brian A.
