- 8 - <br />accurate data on the ground water fluctuation. <br />3.0 CONSTRUCTION CONDITIONS AND DESIGN RECOP'II~fENDATIONS <br />3.1 GENERAL APPROACH <br />It was concluded during our previous phases of work that <br />the existence of the landslides at the site will influence the <br />construction; from a geotechnical point of view it would be <br />preferable to relocate the proposed surficial structures and <br />facilities outside the area of landslides. As this is apparent- <br />ly not feasible, it is necessary to design and construct the <br />proposed facilities so that the old slide deformations are not <br />renewed or new slides or deformations are not initiated. <br />i <br />~I <br />As recommended earlier in our previous report, placement <br />' of large fills or excavating large cuts at improper locations <br />,, should be avoided; drainage patterns should not be deteriorated; <br />I <br />high cuts or cuts at critical locations should be supported. i <br />2oundations of structures within the slide area should be <br />designed so that they do not decrease the stability. j <br />As has become evident during the previous phases of our in- <br />vestigation, ground water conditions have an important impact <br />on the stability of the area. It is very probable that most of <br />the landslides which are present iri the area developed during the <br />i periods when the ground water levels were high and soils and <br />.rocks were saturated. As discussed earlier in this report, <br />,' experience from last spring confirms this conclusion: the steep <br />' slope close to the proposed mine bench became saturated and a <br />slide developed as a result of a very minor excavation for one <br />of the drilling pads.
