i <br />i <br />I <br />• 1 GEOTECHNICAL AND DESIGN STUDIES i <br />~ MOUNT GUNNISON COAL MINE <br />SOMERSET, COLORADO <br />FOR :~RRICK AND COMPANY <br />i I <br />I' <br />'iI <br />I j <br />I~ 1.0 INTRODUCTION I <br />i. i <br />1.1 GENERAL <br />_ i <br />Merrick and Company is currently designing surface stru~- <br />tures and facilities related to a proposed ARCO underground <br />coal mine located near the town of Somerset, to the south of <br />i <br />;': the North Fork of the Gunnison River, approximately eight miles ~~ <br />• ~; east of Paonia, Colorado. <br />~ GEO-HYDRO Consulting, Inc. has been assisting Merrick and <br />Company is the evaluation of the landslides which have been ~ li <br />identified on the site of the proposed mine; the landslides will ~ <br />influence the proposed construction and they have to be taken '~ <br />I <br />into account in the design to avoid the renewal of old defor- ~ <br />orations or the triggering of aew sliding during the construc- <br />i <br />I tion or during the life time of the mine. <br />GEO-HYDRO has been performing the geotechnical studies in <br />i <br />several phases; a report titled "Progress Report, Landslides <br />at Mount Gunnison Mine, Somerset, Colorado, for Merrick and <br />Company" was submitted on July 19, 1980.
