8

•
It can be Seen from this Table that the thickness of the
soil cover varies between 6 and 74+ feet. For technical purposes,
a thickness of 25 to 30 feet will be assumed; unusually high soil
cover thickness found in boring A6 is probably related to large
landslides of the first group; it comprises proof that large
landslides do exist on the site.
2.3 INFLUENCE CF LANDSLIDES ON THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
The implications of the landslides existence at the site and
their influence on the proposed construction were discussed at
several meetings with representatives of ARCO Coal Company and
Merrick and Company. The following recommendations have been made:
i; 1. From a geotechnical point of view, it would be prefer=
li
I. able to relocate the proposed surficial structures and facilities
~joutside the area of landslides as defined in this study and by
ii previous investigations. If, for other reasons, the relocation is
(!not desirable, it has to be expected that increased construction
~icosts will be required to prevent renewal of old slide de-
iformations or the initiation of new slides, deformations or other
I!
~jstability problems.
2. The proposed construction should be designed so that it
(does not seriously influence the stability conditions of old
;landslides. Stability conditions could be influenced and new
'deformations or slides triggered by placing large fills or by
excavating large cuts at improper locations. Inappropriate
(changes in the drainage patterns would have a detrimental effects
ion stability as well.
~ 3. To avoid the risk of surficial slides, it will be
~~necessary to support most cuts that will be required within the
(slide area. They will include the mine portal cu[; it will be
•
i
4prRpnp COMaR1M6 K
