(. I\TRt)UlsCTtq
1.41 General
F{aley &c :AIdrich, Inc. (Haley 3z Aldrich} was retained by Cite Cit}' of Greeley to design a
slurry wall ro serve as a vertical groundwater barrier around the 'S~' Avenue Gravel Fit. A
Laboratory testing program was conducted to develop a mix design for the backfill material
that could be used in the wall. The backtill must meet several engineering criteria to ensure
effective performance of the designed slurry wall. Asail-cement-ben[onite (SCB} mixture is
proposed as backfill for this slurry wall. This backtill mix design report presents the resuhs
of laboratory tests on the individual components as well as the backtill mis.
Haley & Aldrich worked with Advanced Terra Tes[ing, (nc. (ATT) in Golden, Colorado ui
condnet the backtill mix preparation and testing, [o conduct water quality testing, and to
de[ermine engineering properties of setec[ backfill, borrow clay, and bentonite slurry, A
bentonite producer, Western Clay Company. also performed slurry property tests.
1.42 Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this report is to present and evacuate the results of performance tesdne
ct>ndacted on a specific SCB backfill mix design and provide guidelines for the backtill mix
design.
The scope of the work involved with testing and evaluating ttte mix designs included:
^ Determining the characteristics of the proposed mix components, including borrow
clay, site water, bentonite slurry and seiec[ed backfdl;
^ Developing a workable SCB mixmre: and
^ Conducting laboratory tests on the mixture to see if the mix meets specified density.
permeability, and strength properties.
i:Y y~ - ,.. ,,
