Sensitive Species -Fish <br />Colorado River cutthroat trout: Colorado River cutthroat trout is a native of the <br />Colorado River Basin, occurring mainly in upper headwater streams and rivers in <br />northwest Colorado. Preferred stream habitat includes cobble/boulder substrates, riffles, <br />deep pools, and cover provided by logs and undercut banks. Pool density, pool depth, <br />and large woody debris are important components of cutthroat trout habitat <br />There is no suitable habitat for Colorado River cutthroat trout in Minnesota or Deer <br />Creeks. Longterm and cumulative impacts on Colorado River cutthroat trout will not <br />occur. The project will not impact the viability of the species, or result in a trend of <br />Colorado River cutthroat trout towards federal listing <br />Sensitive Species -Insects <br />Nokomis fritillary: The Nokomis fritillary inhabits moist meadows and seeps. The host <br />food for the caterpillar is Troia neplvophylla. The neazest known location is in Unaweep <br />Canyon. <br />There have been no observations of this species in the Gunnison National Forest and <br />there is no suitable habitat for this species in or neaz the project area Pmject activities <br />will not impact the Nokomis fritillary reproductive behavior. Long team and cumulative <br />impacts on the Nokomis fritillary wi11 not occur. This project will not mrpact the <br />viability of the species, or result in a trend of Nokomis fritillary towazds federal listing. <br />Sensitive Species- Plants <br />Rocky Mountain or Adobe Thistie: This species is found on disturbed sites in Adobe <br />clays derived from Mancos Shale (Bradford per. comm.) at elevations between 4,500 and <br />7,000 feet This giant has been found during surveys conducted aY outer sites in the North <br />Fork Valley. In those instances the plants were always located in Adobe clays on <br />disturbed sites. There have been none of these plants found in or neaz the project area <br />There is no suitable Rocky Mountain thistle habitat in the project area. The nearest <br />known plants are neaz the town of Paonia Long term and cumulative impacts on Rocky <br />Mountain thistle will not occur. This project will not impact the viability of the species, <br />or result in a trend of Rocky Mountain thistle towazds federal listing. <br />MANAGEMENT INDICATOR SPECIES <br />The USDA Forest Service, Region 2, lists seven terrestrial vertebrates and common trout, <br />which occur, potentially occur, or habitat for which occurs on this portion of the <br />Gunnison National Forest as Management Indicator Species (Table 3). The purpose of <br />this section of the report is to address these species and detemrine if the proposed <br />activities aze likely to affect any of these species or their habitat within the project area <br />16 <br />
