The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for
use by Mined Land Reclamation Board in their consideration of a
mining permit for:
PETERS GRAVEL PIT NW}of SE} and SW}ofSE} SECTION 25 T20 R55
Name/Type and Location of Mine (Legal)
Wildlife Species List:
Pronghorn antelope, coyote, shorebirds on stock pond, cottontail rabbits,
jackrabbits, various reptiles and passerine birds.
Endangered/Critical Species/Impacted:
No endcingered or critical species impacted.
Critical Habitats/Vegetative Communities Impacted:
No critical habitats impacted. The vegetative community consists mainly of
blue gramma grass and saltbush.
Assessment of Impact:
Both long and short range effects should be minimal if reclamation and
revegetation are properly done. The stock pond should be maintained with
water i.n it if possible to provide habitat for the shorebirds and other
species: who require this source of open water. The area appears to contain
highly erodable sandy soils which will be difficult to revegetate.
Mine Reclamation Recommendations (include key species/habitats for
which :restoration i.s designed):
As Boor, as mining is completed on any part or all of the pit, revegetation
should be implemented as soon as possible to prevent erosion. Native grasses
in the blue gramma community that are found on the site should be used for
revegetation. The stock pond catchment and dike should be restored to provide
habitat for shorebirds and other species who need a source of open water. The
dike should also be revegetated to prevent erosion.
