This mixed water is used within the mine for dust suppression. A portion of the water is also taken up
in the produced coal, and the remainder drains to a sump that is pumped to a series of industrial ponds and finally discharged
in Fish Creek at the surface (Outfall 001). As a result of having come into contact with the domestic wastewater, future
limitations (July 2005) have been set for total ammonia at Outfall 001. Under the current permit, an ammonia compliance plan
is to be submitted to CDPHE by July 1, 2002.
Compliance
The Twentymile Coal Company is currently evaluating the design criteria for pipe/pump system, which would cycle water from
one portion of the subsurface mine to another, in lieu of discharging at Outfall 001. ey eliminating the discharge at the surface
through Outtall 001, the site would become a "non-discharging" facility, removing the need for future ammonia control
requirements (as suggested in the subject permit under Rationale -Page 7, subsection c).
Preliminary design and permit application requirements are being outlined. A first draft design plan is anticipated to be
available in August 2002. A copy of this plan will be forwarded to you. Assuming permit approval, and availability of
equipment, such a pump system could be in place by the Fall of 2002. Should any significant changes to the plan or other
issues arise, CDPHE will be notified in a timely fashion.
Please contact me directly at (970) 870-2750 for any questions.
Brian A.
