eh
ESPEY, HUSTON &ASSOCIATES, INC.

and 21. Faulting is classified as normal with aleft-lateral component of slip most
commonly less than 10 feet; however, larger offsets do occur locally. A high-angle
reverse fault with a maximum displacement of 40 feet was encountered in drill hole
M-170 while elsewhere along the fault throws of 10 feet or less are indicated.
The extent of faulting is beds underlying the FF seam is not known at
this time due in pazt to the lack of adequate surface expression and the density of
drilling that would be required to precisely locate such faults with small displace-
ments. Interpretation of aerial photographs indicate a few azeas which may reflect
fault traces, however, these azeas aze not planned for mining within five yeazs. This
will allow ample time for additional developmental drilling to determine what
effect, if any, they might have on the individual seam mine plans.
2.2.3 Coal Seam StratiRraphy
• The Meeker 15-minute quadrangle in which Northern Coal Company's
mine plan azea is located was first studied by the USGS in 1876 by the Hayden Party
and later by Gale in 1907. The first study to evaluate the coal resources in any
detail was by Hancock and Eby (1930). No formally recognized or established seam
stratigraphy have been established; however, some coal outcrops have been
examined and mapped and "very cursory" correlations of the random exposures
attempted. Subsequent geologic studies have not elaborated on or attempted
identification of the coals except to recognize seams which were being mined
commercially at that time (Collins, 1976). Only the Rienau No. 2 (G-Seam) Mine
was recognized in that study.
Following three years of exploration drilling and mapping, Northern Coal
Company has established seam correlations and identification based on the English
alphabet. Commencing with the first laterally persistent and mappable seam
overlying the Trout Creek Sandstone, the coal beds are assigned letters beginning
with A and continuing through Y in ascending stratigraphic order.
