eh
ESPEY, HUSTON 6 ASSOCIATES, INC.

spontaneous combustion of the coals and other highly carbonaceous strata resulting
in thermal alteration or metamorphism of overlying sedimentary units. Develop-
mental and exploration drilling indicates no actively burning areas are present or
anticipated within the mine plan area.
.See Insert Page F-tea
2.2.2 Geologic Structure
The azea of Northern Coal Company's coal mine plan azea is situated at
the northern end of the Grand Hogback monocline and along the southern limb of the
Danforth Hills highlands, a southeasterly trending anticlinal structure associated
with the White River Uplift to the east. The Danforth Hills anticline borders the
property on the north and is asymmetric with gentle dips to the north and much
steeper dips on the south flank where it is associated with the Sulfur Creek syncline
(see Surficial Geology, Exhibit F-3).
Structurally, Northern Coal Company's mine plan area is confined to the
Sulfur Creek syncline. It too, is asymmetric with a steep south dipping north limb of
24° to 45° and a north dipping south limb varying from 12° to 25°. The structure is
doubly plunging with the surface expression of the axis trending approximately N.
83° E., approximately 134 miles north of the Rienau No. 2 (G-Seam) Mine.
Dips of the stratum and of the G, J, P and UP seams range from 18° to
the north at the Rienau No. 2 (G-Seam) Mine to about 12° to the west of north along
Aicher's Draw near the eastern boundary of the proposed permit area. North of the
Rienau No. 2 (G-Seam) Mine, toward the axis of the syncline, dips tend to shallow,
becoming almost level, eventually reversing dip direction north of the synclinal axis.
Geologic cross-sections aze presented in Exhibits F-4 through F-6 and show both
structure and seam correlations of the principal coal seams across the property.
Minor faulting involving the FF seam at the Northern No. 1 (FF-Seam)
Mine is present in a subparallel pattern neaz the axis of the syncline in sections 20
~-
F-5
