4-3
4.3.1 MA1 -Off-Site Management at an Approved Treatment/Disposal Facility
4.3.1.1 Description of Management Alternative
Mine discharges would be collected and transported off site to an approved wastewater treat-
ment/dispoeal facility. The major work activities associated with this alternative include
constructing equalization/storage surface impoundments and installing tank truck loading
facilities.
' 4.3.1.2 Results of Preliminary Screenin
Although this alternative is easily implemented and effective, it is not practical. Based on the
t anticipated volume of mine water that would be managed by this alternative, the logistics and
cost for truck transportation would be prohibitive in addition to the cost that would be charged
' for treatment/disposal. Therefore, this management alternative was dropped from further
consideration.
1
4.4 Evaluation of Remainine Alternatives
The remaining five management alternatives (MA2, MA3, MA4, MA5, and MA6) were also
evaluated for effectiveness and implementability. Since these alternatives passed the prelimi-
nary screening stage, they were further evaluated based on cost considerations. A description
of the five remaining alternatives and their associated evaluations is presented in the following
' sections.
4.4.1 MA2 - On-Site Treatment Utilizing RO and Direct Discharge
4.4.1.1 Description oCManagement Alternative
Mine discharges would be collected, equalized, and treated prior to discharge. ARer equalize-
' tion and particulate settling, the mine waters would be filtered to remove solids which may
impair operation of the treatment process end then routed to the treatment system.
' Based on the historical significant variations in mine water quality (flow and TDS concentra-
tion), a separate RO treatment unit would be installed for each of the three discharges. The
RO units would be centrally located to provide more efficient treatment process control.

1
