Runoff is very rapid beca~!se of the steep stones and shallow <br />soils [:Pith 104± waterholdi.n~ capacities, Sediment yie1A is from less tl!an <br />0.2 to ].0 acre-feet per snuare mile per year. <br />The landscape is characterized by deco sandstone canyons with steep slopes <br />and long very narrow va lleys, and f.loodplains. Small, gently sloping mesas <br />arr. above the canyons. Steeply slooing mesas are above the canyons, <br />Steeply sloping :Illllvial fans border some of the canyon wa11.s. Nuworous <br />interlnitteot dralRaf;PW1V5 dissect the steep slopes. 'I'hc dominant cover is <br />pimaon-juniper. Oal;hrush, scrviceberry; anH grass arc more abundant at <br />higher elevations because of increaced precipitation. IJil.lows and co[ron- <br />wood trees occupy small tracts along the narrow valleys. Thera are a few <br />irriPata~rl llay fie.l.ds whcrr. thr valleys arc w.ulcr. <br />1'h is "nit is composed of two major components. About 45 percent of the <br />a~nit is rock outcrop, mainly sands tone, with some small ontc ro pti of shale. <br />Another 49 ~ercenC of the unit has sha]].ow soils, lees than 20 inches, <br />over underlying sandstone and some shale. '1'Ilese soils are stouv and <br />usually have loamy, ligl?C-covered surface .layers.
