• These parameters were taken off of a standardized sewage strength chart for an
industrial facility. The BOD and strength will probably be lower due to the fact that a
majority of the employees will be working in the underground mine and will not have
access to the sanitary facilities except for showering.
Using the calculated hydraulic and organic loading rates, the plant was sized. As
can be seen on the plant component table in the Sanitary Design Calculations section, the
actual plant will be sized substantially larger than the calculated plant size. This is to
allow for possible surges in the system. The plant will consist of four main components;
an aeration chamber, clarifying tank, sludge holding tank, and chlorine contact tank. Two
(2) blowers will supply air to the aeration chamber. Both blowers are capable of producing
a total of 200 cfm .with one blower acting as a backup to the main blower. A mechanical
type sludge removal rake will be installed in the clarifier tank. The rake will scrape
sludge off of the tank walls and deposit it on the bottom of the tank. The sludge will then
be pumped to a holding tank at the inlet side of the plant. The chlorine contact tank is at
the effluent end of the plant. Chlorination tablets will be used to treat clarified water
prior to discharging into the stream.
• The plant which WFC plans to use is manufactured by Hydro-Aerobics, inc. of
Milford, Ohio. The plant has been sized so that there should be no problem meeting
secondary treatment limits which have been set by the Denver Planning and Standards
Section of the Colorado Department of Health. Figure 5 shows a typical H-200 plant
which WFC will purchase once the Colorado Department of Health approval is received.
The actual purchased plant, however, will have a circular clarifying tank with a rake arm.
Sewerlines were sized for the peak flow from the industrial building. Eight inch
PVC pipe is to be used for influent and effluent lines. A 6 inch line will be used for piping
to the polishing pond. it is WFC's plan to use New Elk Pond Uo. 6 as a polishing pond. The
pond is used for make-up water for the nearby coal preparation facility, therefore, there
will be no discharge from this pond into the Purgatoire River during normal operations.
Piping to the pond is shown on Figure 4.
•
-2-
