1~

1 Colorado squa:afish, Ptychocheilus lucius; American peregrene
.~.~ falcon, Falco perecrinus anat4!n; and the black-footed ferret,
••.-~ Atustela nigrioes.
1_
t The absence of permanent streams on the study site
excludes the presence of the two endangered fish species.
It is ~lnlikely that either of these fish are present in the
Williams Fork or Yampa Rivers. They receive waters of the
intermittent streams which drain the site.
The Gre_rback cutthroat trout is native to the eastern
slope streams of the Platte River drainage in Colorado and
Wyoming. The Colorado saua:af ish was historically found in
the main charnels of the Colorado and Green Rivers.
The American peregrene falcon is an uncomr,.on breeding
summer resident of Colorado and is most often seen in
migration. All recent reporte3 nexting sites are on the
eastern slope. It is extremely unlikely t?tat this species
which prefers to nest on ledges of cliffs near water is
present at the study site.
The blacl•-foored fe.-ret is a specialized carnivore

~ associat_d with prairie dots. There have been no report=_d
- sightings of the ferrets in Routt County for over 25 years.
The absence of prairie dogs in the ?4illiams Fork Mountains

~ further reduces the liF:eiiliood of the nrese: V-e of this
, speci_s. '
In addition to those species on the Federal Revist_r
listing, the Colorado Division of Wildlife includes two
species of fish, bontail chub, Gila elecans; and humpback
chub, Gila c oha; and also one bird, the Great sancikiill
r ~ crane, Grus carad=_^sis, as endangered in the region of
l
.r northwestern Colorado. The humnhack sucker, Xyrauchen
texanus, is declared as thre_tened by the State.
1' The absence of permanent streams at the study site
`- ~ excludes the presence of the dish species. These fish

` were historically found on the main channels of the '
~ Colorado and Green Rivers and their major tributaries from
~. _ Mexico to Wyoming. Today, the Yampa River is the only
major tributary in Colorado which has significant remaining
j' habitat for these species.
_
CJ .~
The Great sandhill brane is kno:an to breed along the

~ Yampa River ir} Routt County and has a dance ground near the
- Hayden Power Plant. The study site does not provide suitable
~"
~ habitat to attract this soecies.~
-
~
.
L.~ . -
_ ...
~~
~
.
~:
~,.
-76-
