Q;, The traps were set and baited in the evening and checked
~, the following morning. The traps were left open during the
day and rechecked in the late afternoon.
Two minor plant communities, wet meadow and serviceberry-
chokecherry, and a floristic variation to the sagebrush-
snowberry community (snowberry-sagebrush) were also censured
for small mammals. A trap line was used to census the small
mammals of these communities due to their limited size. The
line consisted of 25 Sherman traps spaced fifteen meters
apart along a 360-meter transect through the community. Each
of these communities were censured for two days, October 7
and 8, 1976. Again, traps were set and baited in the
evening and checked the following morning. Each trap was
left open during the day and rechecked in the later after-
noon.
Mammals trapped were identified as to species, sex,
and when possible, reproductive status and age class. Each
animal trapped was marked by means of toe clipping to allow
for recapture identification. Trap mortalities were kept
to verify field identification.
Each plant community was trapped as described: aspen,
~,'.; 147 trap nights; oak, 196 trap nights; sagebrush-snowberry,
~:~=' 196 trap nights; chokecherry-snowberry, 245 trap nights; wet
meadow, 50 trap nights; serviceberry-chokecherry, 50 trap
nights; ,and snowberry-sagebrush, 50 trap nights. The small.
mammals were censured for a total of 938 trap nights.
2.2.3 Avifauna (Bird) Inventory TechniQUes
The bird species on the study site were censured
using standard census techniques on October 15-17, 1976.
Each of the four major plant communities was censured by
a line transect technique (census transect approximately
500 meters long). Each transect was walked three times,
once each day during the census period. Time spent on each
transect was one-half hour. The time of day when the
census was taken was not kept constant, although all
censuses were conducted during daylight hours. Weather
condictions Caere windy, overcast, and temperatures were
between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit all three days. All
biards which could be identified by either their vocalization
or by sight were recorded. Birds not specifically asso-
ciated with the plant community, such as high flying birds,
were not listed in the census, but were recorded as species
seen on the site.
~~`-
