• SOIL RESOURCES INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
Soil resources in the permit area were evaluated by Mined
Land Reclamation Consultants (MRC) in 1979 and by Wyoming Fuel
Company in 1980. A total of 400 acres were mapped as a result
of these surveys (Figure lE).
MRC's soils inventory evaluated the soil resources in the
area of Pit 1 (W~ of the NW; of Section 11). Wyoming Fuel
Company's soil inventory evaluated the soil resources in the
area of Pit 2 (N~ of Section 10).
No soil information was collected in the area of the old
Sigma Mine (SW; of SW; of Section 2) as this area had been disturbed
prior to 1979.
• The objectives of the soil inventory were to: (1) charact-
erize the suitability of topsoil material based on physical and
chemical analyses and field descriptions of mapping units, (2)
quantify the amount of suitable topsoil within areas to be dis-
turbed by mining activities (3) develop a topsoil removal plan
and (4) estimate the depth and suitability of topsoil to be
replaced during reclamation.
METHODOLOGY
Mapping
The soil survey conforms to the general standards of the
National Cooperative Soil Survey as outlined in USDA Handbooks
436, 18 and 60.
Field mapping of soils was done on black and white aerial
. photos of 1 "=500' scale. Mapping unit delineations were generally
-1-
