Large scale use of herbicides
is not being promoted; however, they have a high level of utility when controlling problem
perennial weeds in permanent revegetation areas requiring reseeding, or where surface
s [ability in a shrub establishment area is critical. Any herbicides used will be based on
recommendations in the mosC current Colorado Yeed Control Guide issued by the Colorado
State University Cooperative Extension Service. Prior to the application of any
herbicide, approval of their use will be requested from CMLRD. The herbicides wilt be
registered for the use intended and will be applied by certified applicators with strict
adherence to the label. A herbicide application program has been in-place at Peabody~s
Seneca II Mine.
Seed Mixes and Planting Lists. Two seed mixes have been developed for permanent
revegetation. A shrub seeding list, temporary stabilization mix, and a list of annual grains to
be used for cover cropping complete the lists of plant materials to be used in the various
revegetation activities.
Initial considerations in the development of the permanent mixes and seedling lists
included the anticipated reclaimed area site conditions and the desired revegetation
communities. Specific goals used to develop [he permanent seed mixes and seedling lists
included rapid end long-term surface stabilization, ease of establishment, maximum use of
native species, adequate species diversity, high levels of utility for livestock antl
wildlife, good forage production potential, compatibility with naturally rag eneratin9
native species present in replacetl topsoi L, and the ability to be self-sustaining or
Compliment successional processes in [he recl of mad plant communities. Attainment of these
goals, in turn, facfLitates achievement of the postmi ning land uses.
To finalize the plant materials lists, dominant or commonly occurring species identifietl
in the regional vegetation basel ine studies were evaluated for inclusion in the seed mixes
or planting lists. The list of these species was further refined to include the more
13-73 Revised 01/15/93
