The existing air quality is typical of undeveloped regions in the western
United States; ambient pollutant levels are usually near or below measurable
limits. Notable e.KCeptions in the region include high, short-term
concentrations of total suspended particulates (TSP), non-methane
hydrocarbons (NMHC), and carbon monoxide (CO) in nearby towns (BLM 1983).
The project area is rated a Class II area for air quality, consistent with
the majority of the remainder of the state (BLM 1983). Class II areas have
specified allowable increases (increments) of pollutants which may never
exceed a given standard (ambient standard).
Concentrations of air pollutants reported for the region of the project area
are shown in Table K-1.
Table K-1 TYPICAL POLLUTANT LEVELS FOR PROJECT AREA
(In Micrograms Per Cubic Meter)
•
•
Pollutant Annual Average
1-Hour Average
TSP
S02
N02
0~
Source: BLM 1983
10 to 40
0.3 to 3
2 to 3U
24-Hour Average
80 to 130
50 to 130
Air quality monitoring on-site, as well as at nearby
tracts) indicates that the pollutants generated are
ranges, with some short-term exceedences (BLM 1983).
118 to 160
1000 to 2300
locations (C-a, C-b
within acceptable
K-2
