• 3.0 LOCATION OF NOISE-SENSITIVE RECEPTORS <br />Noise-sensitive receptors within the project study area were identified by MCC. As shown in <br />Figure 1, these receptors include the Town of Somerset and four residences labeled A, B, C, and D. The <br />center of Somerset is located about 6,500 feet northeast of [he proposed fan site. There is no direct line <br />of-sight from the fan location to Somerset due to local topography. With respell to the fan locatio~i, <br />Residence A is located about 10,000 feet west, Residence B is on the north side of the Gunnison Rivei <br />about 7,500 feet west-northwest, Residence C is just north of SH-133, about 3,750 feet west-northwest, <br />and Residence D is on the north side of SH-133, about 5,000 feet west-northwest. There is direct line-of- <br />sight from the fan location to each of these residences. <br />4.0 EXISTING NOISE ENVIP,ONMENT <br />Existing noise sources in the valley include the Gunnison P,iver, traffic on SH-133, trains, mining <br />activities, and movement of vegetation by wind. The Gunnisen rver is the only source that is constant <br />• over time, and controls the background noise level in the valley. <br />Based on obseriations made during the survey, the average daytime (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) <br />traffic rlow on SH-~ 33 is about one -two vehicles every minute. This lave) of trafric is too intermittent to <br />appreciably aired the ambient noise level. During the nighttime x:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.), traffic v:as <br />almost non-existent. Zero vehicles were observed during three hours of measurements. <br />Approximately four trains were observed during the 24-hour survey. Low frequency noise from the <br />engines, and higher frequency clatter from the coal cars was clearly audible in the valley. Train noise <br />was too intermittent, however, to appreciably aftect the ambient noise level. <br />Noise from mining activities, i.e. conveyors, motors, and fans was audible only in and east of <br />Somerset. No mining noise was audible at measurement locations west of Somerset (refer to Section 5 <br />far measurement locations). <br />Noise generated by wind passing through local vegetation was audible for wind speeds in excess <br />of about 5 mph. During the survey, these conditions existed only at night. Wind speeds were below 10 <br />mph during the entire survey, which are favorable noise measurement conditions. <br /> <br />2 <br />
