I-6

Several ditches which take their supply from the Canadian
River irrigate land east of the river. They tend to be
longer, larger and have more irrigated acreage than the
ditches west of the river. Table I-1 also summarizes the
irrigated acreage and maximum height of irrigation for these
ditches.
Several ditches irrigate land east of the Canadian River but
take their supply from tributaries of the Canadian, including
Kelly, Willow, Muddy, Cabin, Allen, McKenzie, Coon and
Government Creeks. These right bank tributaries have basin
areas ranging from 1,200 to 9,410 acres. The creeks all have
good sources of supply because the upper reaches extend into
the Medicine Bow Mountains where peak elevations reach 12,560
feet. The higher elevations allow much greater accumulations
of snowpack than the tributaries on the west side of the
• Canadian. Unfortunately, no stream gauge records are known to
exist for these tributaries to illustrate their greater
yield. Table I-2 summarizes the tributary area, upper basin
elevation, the ditches served and their irrigated acreages of
the right bank tributaries which support irrigation.
Irrigated Acreage - Michigan River Basin
There are approximately 20,800 irrigated acres supported by
the Michigan River, excluding the Illinois River, its major
tributary. The identified irrigation systems and their
estimated irrigated areas are also shown on Plate 22, North
Park Irrigation Study. The Michigan River supports more
irrigated acreage because it has more suitable land and a
much greater physical supply. Average monthly runoff is shown
on Figure I-2, as determined from runoff records available at
Walden. An adequate physical supply is available for April
• through June, with reduced but usable supplies available in
July.
Leonard Rice Consulting Waler Engineers. Inc.
