The pile was reclaimed in 1987, now entering its 5 year
revegetation assessment. Establishing revegetation was a problem on the slopes and in
addition to drill seeding it was hand sown on the eastern and western slopes. Hand sowing
seems to have been more effective than the drill. Grasses are abundant, but woody stems
and fortis are few. Woody stems that do exist are: Woody rose and rabbit brush.
There are two clean water diversion ditches, D-9 and D-10, on the eastern and
western side of the refuse pile that are heavily ripraped. Minor erosion may occur along
the eastern ditch where the slope dramatically drops to f ollow the topography. Ditch D-7
is up above the refuse area, to the north side of the main road.
HYDROLOGICAL BALANCE
surface Water monitoring
Beginning in 1981, 2 sites upstream and downstream respectively are monitored
biannually for pH, EC and temperature. PH values range from 8.4 at high f low to 7. 0 at
base f low, a neutral pH with a calcium carbonate character.
Waters are classified as Class 2 for recreation, and Class 1 for fish and aquatic life.
There are two NPDES outfalls at the site, 001 and 007. 001 is for the treatment
system and 007 located south of the main road down from Portal #3 at the far west end of
the site. (see D-4-7
map) 001 discharges at rate of 30-40 gpm. and 007 at about 5-7 gpm.
Ground Water Monitoring
Wells are D1-A and D2-A, at the base of the refuse area. TDS, water quality, pH
and EC are all seasonally effected, with low values in June (spring runoff) and high in the
fall, August and September. All parameters meet the standards except for Copper, due in
part to downstream shale and coal outcrops.
Ditches and Culverts
There are 4 ditches to check: D-9 and D-10 on the sides of the refuse pond, all
heavy rip rap, ditch between the long pond and T1 and T2 also heavy rip rap with a 4011+
culvert to the other side of the access road, and the ditch from AML's portal Mine #2
wetland site down to the ditch, also heavy rip rap.
of course the ditch along the main roadside can also be checked for integrity as
well.
There are two culverts on site. one between the long pond and T1, already
mentioned above and one exiting P-3, under the main road across from the orange metal
entrance gate.
