The overburden ranges from about 2 to 18 feet thick, depending on
location. The overburden will be deposited both down-slope to the outside
of the mine bench and on the mine bench for use as backfill against the
westerly side of the pit. The pit will be mined in lifts to an ultimate
depth of about 60 to 80 feet and form a bench. The amount of overburden to
be produced and extent of deposition will depend on the actual volume of
overburden produced. Some of the overburden can be used in the manufacture
of brick products and some of it may also be sold.
Because of the extent of existing disturbance and presence of rock
outcrops, minimal native soil is present in the area to be affected.
Exhibit B - Site Description - Soils Information provides additional
details regarding soils. Due to steep slopes, what soil does remain may be
difficult to recover without compromising safety. A reasonable effort will
be made to strip and stockpile approximately the upper 6 to 9 inches of
soil (or other suitable thickness to be determined as soil is exposed) that
is encountered as mining progresses. The volume which may be salvaged is
expected to be minimal. Typically, in the area to be mined, the surface
soil is a very stony sandy loam about 4 inches thick; the subjacent layer
is a very stony sandy loam about 10 inches thick overlying bedrock. Any
soil salvaged will be stockpiled and, as a stabilization measure, seeded
with 20 pounds per acre western wheatgrass, broadcast. The anticipated
stockpile locations are illustrated on the Exhibit E-2 map. In addition,
live handling of soil will occur whenever possible and some soil may be
also stockpiled on the mine bench as space permits.
Small, temporary storage sheds may be constructed on site to store
tools.
The access road is pre-existing.
