' s/V EXHIBIT D
Geology
Cherokee Clay Kline
The Cherokee Clay Mine is located within the upper Cretaceous Vermejo
' formation, consisting of interbedded sandstone and clays tones laid down by
' streams flowing eastward off the Wet Mountains, uplifted about 65 million
years ago during the Laramide orogeny. Decomposition of dense, tropical
' vegetation prevalent here at that tune produced z. carbon residue, which
gives the clay its dark color. The commodity of interest is a clay seam
1 about 28 feet thick overlain by 3 to 8 feet of buff sandstone overburden.
' An extremely irregular sandstone lens within the clay probab]y averages
about :foot thick through the deposit. The strata have been gently warped
' into a shallow, open anticline, whose axis trends horizontally at W21uE, and
whose limbs dip at 5° easterly and 7o westerly. The land surface of the
lease area conforms approximately to the shape of this anticline, as may be
' seen on the U.S.G.S, topographic map of the Rockvale Quadrangle.
1

1

I 1
