the Middle Creek region. Redtop and clover (Trifolium), which are
considered to be moderately sensitive, are also found. On a weighted
average, a total of 5.6% of the Middle Creek sample area is composed of
moderately sensitive species, which represents 7.6% of the relative
composition.
Production data was collected for Pasture 2 of the Middle Creek region.
As shown on Table 5, an average of 46.6 grams per quarter meter square plot
were obtained which corresponds to approximately 1,660 pounds per acre of
oven dried forage. Moderately tolerant plants compose 64.1% of that amount
and 25.3% is of moderately sensitive species. The vegetative cover of these
two categories in Pasture 2 is 44.9% for moderately tolerant and 4.20% for
moderately sensitive. The major component of moderately tolerant forage is
smooth brome (42.8%) and redtop (24.0%) is the major portion of moderately
sensitive forage.
The Trout Creek alluvial valley floor region was evaluated with the
assessment of irrigated pastures 7, 8N, 8S, 10, 11, 12E, 14, 15N, and 15S
which are denoted on map 1. Pasture 12W was also sampled; this pasture has
been irrigated but has not been improved for either hay or pasture
production. The area is more typical of a sagebrush/meadow type community.
Data from a total of 47 cover transects were collected in this area. Table
2, Trout Creek Alluvial Valley Floor, denotes the species cover and
composition as calculated on a weighted average basis for the 9 pastures
which were studied. In this region, total vegetative cover is 83.5%. The
grasses cover 53.3%, grasslike plants cover 9.2%, fortis comprise 19.0%, and
shrubs cover 2.0% of the area.
Smooth brome and reed canarygrass are both considered moderately
tolerant. Similar moderately tolerant species include tall fescue, foxtail
barley, intermediate wheatgrass, western wheatgrass, and wheatgrass. A total
of 17.0% of the area is composed of moderately tolerant grasses, as
calculated on a weighted average. Another 8.9% of the area is covered by
moderately tolerant grasslike species. The total coverage of moderately
tolerant species is 25.8% or 30.9% of the relative composition. Orchard
grass and timothy, both moderately sensitive species, are found in the area.
Various species of clover are also found. Moderately sensitive species
comprise 15.3% of the Trout Creek Area cover on a weighted average basis,
which represents 18.4% of the relative cover. Species production data was
obtained for Pasture 11 which is irrigated with water diverted from Trout
Creek above the confluence of Middle Creek. Table 6, Pasture Eleven
Vegetative Cover and Production, indicates a total of 127.5 grams per quarter
meter square plot were obtained from the pasture. This corresponds roughly
to 4550 pounds of oven dried forage per acre. Of this amount, 27.9% of the
relative production is composed of moderately tolerant species and 34.6% is
of moderately sensitive species. Smooth brome was the major component,
10.0%, of the moderately tolerant grasses while Carex, a moderately
tolerant grasslike plant, contributed 13.6%. Redtop sup ip ed 23.2% of the
moderately sensitive total production and timothy supplied 9.3%. In Pasture
11, the vegetative cover of moderately tolerant plants is 31.4% and
moderately sensitive plants is 21.4%.
The vegetative cover of the Fish Creek area is reported on Tables 3 and
4, Fish Creek Alluvial Valley Floor - Vegetative Cover of Irrigated Pastures
