136
• site: 5RT31 (Fig. 1)
site Type: Open camp.
Location: SW'aNE'<, Sec. 22, T5n, R86w; UTM Zone 13, E328,925m., N4,471,200ni.
Description: 5RT31, an open camp, is a diffuse scatter of flakes and tools
on the top of a relatively flat ridge that parallels the north bank of
Foidel Creek. The site extends from the southern end of the ridge 185 m.
to the northeast and is 100 m. wide. The elevation at the site is 6855 ft.
(2,089 m.). Foidel Creek is the nearest source of water, lying 200 m. to
the southeast. Vegetation at the site includes sagebrush and introduced
pasture grasses. The site faces to the south, but has little protection
from any other direction.
The tool assemblage observed at the site includes unifacially and bi-
facially worked scrapers, projectile points, manos, and metates. The mate-
rials were more concentrated on the ridge crest. An additional area of
concentration lies on the north side of the ridge, approximately 70 m.
from the main locus of the site. No visible permanent features were ob-
served. The bulk of the site was under cultivation in the past, but is
now used as pasture. There are also areas which appear to be deflating.
This site is known to a number of local residents who live in close
proximity to it.
Diagnostic nrcifacts: Projectile points, Types III, IVB, IVD, IVE, IVF;
manos, Type IVA, IVB; metate fragments, Type [IB; bifacial tools, Types
IB, IK; and a unifacial tool, Type IIC.
evaluation: The disturbance of this site by cultivation has destroyed its
potential to yield information important to prehistory. 5RT31 should not
. be nominated to the NRHP. Should the site be endangered by future deve lop-
` men t, protection under other statutes should be seriously considered.
