The system of soil classification stn rentlp used teas
adopted by the National Couperatice Soil Survey in
191ii. P.eaders interested in further details about the
system should refer to the latest litertture available.
The current system of classification has six cate-
gories. Beginning ttith the broadest. these categories
are the order, suborder, great group, subgroup, family,
and series. Lt this system the differentiae used as a
basis for classification are soil priiperlies that can be
observed in the field, or that can be inferred either
from other properties that arc observable in the field
or from the combined data oC soil science and other
disciplines.'1'he properties selected for the higher cate-
gories are the result of soil genesis m~those that affect
soil genesis. In table Fl, the soil series of the P.io Grande
County Area are classified accm•ding to the current
system.'I'he categories of this syst mare defined briefly
in the follon'ing paragraphs.
ORDER. Ten soil m•ders are r ognized. The differ-
entiae are based on the kind and d gree of the dominant
sets of soil-forming processes. Ea h order is identified
by a «'ord of three m• four s}•Ilab es ending in sot. An
example is i\'Iollisols.
SUBORDER. )/aC}7 Ol'det' IS dl Ided Into sUb01'del'S
based primarily on properties that influence soil genesis
and are important to plant grot'th or on properties
selected to reflect what seemed to e the most important
variables within the order. Each uborder is identified
by a n'ord of hco syllables. The 1st syllable indicates
the order. An example is Aquoll (lqu, meaning ~+'ater,
plus ol(, from Mollisols) .
GREAT CROUP. Each suborder is divided into great
