Revised 6-16-81
CRYORTHENTS, STEEP SERIES (map symbol: X-60) (26% of property)
The Cryorthents, Steep series consists of moderately fine
textured shaly clay loam to clay loam, generally very shallow
(less than 10 inches) and develops on sandstone or shale uplands.
These soils have a low available water holding capacity of approximately
1.5 inches with the rooting depth. The soil is low in organic matter
and has a severe erosion hazard. It is on unfavorable exposures and
much of the moisture is removed by high winds. Slopes range from
10 to 65 percent. The soil from Backhoe Trench 13 and the soils
from Auger Hole 22, whose analyses are shown in Table 9, are typical
of the Cryorthents series of soils on the Bourg property. These
soils sustain a very low amount of vegetation and would be of little
use in reclamation.
Capability units are VIIs-2 for nonirrigated.
COALMONT SERIES (map symbol: X73-AE) (1% of property)
The Coalmont series consits of moderately deep, well-drained
soils formed in material weathered from Coalmont shale. They occupy
upland hills and ridges at elevations of 8,000 to 8,300 feet, and
are underlain by soft shale at depths of 20 to 40 inches. Slopes
are 5 to 12 percent. The native vegetation is mainly alkali sage-
. brush, streambank wheatgrass, pine needlegrass, mutton grass, winterfat,
Junegrass, squi~eltail and low rabbitbrush. The mean annual
precipitation is 10 to 12 inches. The mean annual air temperature is
37 to 38 degrees F. and the frost-free season is 35-45 days.
In a representative profile the surface layer is light grayish
brown loam about 4 inches thick. The subsoil is grayish brown and
light brownish gray clay about 16 inches thick. The underlying material
is light yellowish brown clay loam over calcareous clay shale at a
depth of about 30 inches.
Permeability is slow and the available water capacity is approx-
imately 4.5 inches within the rooting depth. The heavy texture tends
to slow water loss by evaporation and runoff.
These soils are mainly used for grazing. Some areas are used
for irrigated hayland and pasture. In the Bourg property there is
of course no irrigated hayland or pasture.
RECEIVED
• .fUL 9 1981
MINED LAND RECLAMATION-COAI
M-5 COLO. DE71. OF NATURAL RE50'~RCES
