1
1
Seeding in this region should be done in mid-summer
(June 30 - July 15) to take advantage of the most favorable
rainfall months. If this is not possible, the planting could
' be made late in the fall (October - November) for germination
the following spring.
Since the steepness of slopes will not permit the use
' of mechanical seeding equipment, it will be necessary to
hand broadcast the seed. For seed germination and seedling
establishment, the seed must be covered to a depth of about
cne-half inch. Covering of seeds can be accomplished by
' raking.
' An alternative to seeding forbs and shrubs will be to
use transplants of the native vegetation in the surrounding
' area. It would provide beneficial wind protection for herba-
ceous plants and tend to hold snow on the reclaimed surface.
Transplants also restore the landscape appearance more quickly.
' Some of the plants to be considered in this venture would
include Big Sagebrugh, Wax Currant, Rabbit Brush, t4ountain
' Mahogany, and Gooseberry Globemallow. All transplanting will
be done in the spring to allow a full growing season to
insure establishment. The transplants will be planted in
' pockets or holes to provide for additional moisture. Random
placement of transplants will add continuity and consistence
' F-ith the surrounding vegetation.
The application of relatively low rates of nitrogen and
' phosphorous fertilizers are desirable for the establishment
' E-4
II,
