(Does not include tree planting mainly For s;.... .-^.jr-~.)
Purpose
To stabilize the soil; reduce damage from sediment and runoff to dowr.strPam
areas; improve wildlife habitat; and enhance natural beauty.
Where applicable
On sediment-producing, highly erodible or severely eroded areas, such as
dams, dikes, mine spoil, levees, cuts, fills surface-mined areas, and
denuded or Bullied areas where vegetation is difficult to establish with
usual seeding or planting methods.
Specifications
1. Construction
A. Critical areas should not have slopes steeper than 3:1. Slopes of
6:1 or flatter are much more desirable. In general, the chances for
vegetation establishment increase as percent slope decreases. Small
areas steeper than 3:1 are often unavoidable, but should be kept to
a minimum.
B. Excess water from adjacent areas should not be allowed to flow onto
the critical area.
C. Length of slope should be properly controlled with diversions. They
will be constructed in accordance with Standards & Specifications
for "Diversions".
2. Seedbed Preparation
See Standard E Specifications for "Seedbed Preparation". For site ;~re-
paration and other quidelines for woody plantings see Standard b specifi-
cations for "Woodland Site Preparation" and "Tree Planting".
