U.s. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE FADE 3 DF 3
NATURAL kESUURLES CUNSERVATIUN SERVICE • • 04/i11v8
NATER FEATURES
Endnote -- NATEk FEATURES--Continued
Information on the extent of flooding based on soil sate is less specific than that provided by detailed engineering
surveys that delineate flood-Drone areas et specific flood frequency levels.
Nigh eater table (seasonal) is the highest level of a saturates zone in the soil in most years. the depth to a
seasonal high eater table applies to undrained soils. The estimates are based mainly on the evidence of a saturated
zone, namely grayish colors or mottles in the soil. Indicated in this report are the depth to the seasonal high
eater table; the kind of eater table, that is, 'Apparent', 'Artesian , or 'Perched'; end the months of the rear that
the eater table commonly is high. A eater table that is seasonally high for less than 1 month is not indicated in
th15 report.
An 'Apparent' voter table is a thick zone of free eater in the soil. It is indicated by the level at which eater
stands in an encased borehole after adequate time is allowed for adjustment in the surrounding soil.
An 'Artesian' rater table exists under a hydrostatic beneath an impermeable layer. Uhen the impermeable layer has been
penetrated by a cased borehole, the water rises. the final level of the rater in the cased borehole is characterized as
an artesian aster table.
A 'Perched' eater table is eater standing above en unsaturated zone. In places an upper, or 'Perched', eater
table is separated from a loner one br s dry zone, Gnly saturated zones within a depth of about o feet are
indicated.
Ponding is standing water in a closed depression. The eater is removed only by deep percolation, transpiration,
evaporation, or a combination of these processes.
This report gives the depth and duration of pondin9 and the time of near Uhen Ponding is mast likely. OeDth, duration,
and probable dates of occurrence ere estimated.
Depth is expressed as the depth of ponded eater in feet above the soil surface. Duration is expressed as 'Very
brief' if less then i days, 'Brief' if 2 to 7 days, 'Lone' if 1 to 3G days, end 'Very long' if more than 30 days. The
information is based on the relation of each soli on the landscape to historic pondin9 and on local information about
the extent and levels of Ponding.
