Mulching

1) Mulching will protect new seedlings, conserve moisture, and prevent erosion. Several
mulching materials are available. The application of native hay at a rate of 2 tons per
acre is desirable. Hay of local origin is encouraged to avoid introduction of weeds. Wood
fiber may also be used depending on cost and availability of the mulch. Mulch will be
crimped in with a disk or anchored in some way to hold mulch on the site.
Other Considerations
1) New seeding may need protection from livestock and wildlife to insure good
establishment.
2) Small trial plots to test species and methods will be established as soon as practical.
Information from these plots can be invaluable once large-scale redamation begins.
3) Problems may occur when mining is done near the irrigation ditch passing through the
area. Seepage from the irtigation ditch may cause problems with wetness and bank
stability. The ditch will be line, sealed, or rerouted to diminish stability and erosion
problems.
4) Nitrogen fertilizer will inhibit natural regeneration of lodgepole pine. Yet, nitrogen
fertilization is necessary for the successful establishment of grasses. A successful grass
-legume cover will stabilize the soil and control erosion more quickly. So ACA will
establish the grass -legume cover as soon as possible and transplant shrubs and trees
' sparingly. This plan will control erosion, establish grass -legume growth, and enhance
~• wildlife habitat (per Department of Wildlife recommendations).
5) The permanent seed mixture may be modified over time, with exceptions or substitutions
'~ being made due to seed availallity and ! oncost. The seed mixture described above
k. would cost in the range of $44. /Acre.
h'
T1ME TABLE FOR RECLAMATION OPERATIONS
Berm Construction
1998 2010 2030 2070
Direct haul topsoil, reveg.
East, west, 8 south pit
slope Phase 1
Finish grading, reveg.
