Vegetative Abstract: There are three major vegetative zones on the management area: Irrigate farm and pasture land; riparian; and rangeland. The riparian habitat lo- cared on the east side is characterized by cottonwood and willow-tamaris:: stands. The rangeland on the west side is characterized by shortgrass prairie, yucca, cacti and sagebrush. The irrigated land varies with ware availability but is made up mainly of corn, milo,wheat and alfalfa. b. wildlife Abstract: The primary game species are deer, cottontail rabbit, fox squirrel,~calz • quail. bobwhite quail, ringnecked pheasant, mourning dove and waterfowl. ' Important varmints and furbearers include coyotes, red fox, raccoon,muskr~ beaver, prairie dogs and bobcats. Nongame wildlife includes over 150 species of i~r~s, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, most notably the Ark:,: sas darter. e. Harvest nbstrae[: The area is primarily an upland game harvest site, with doves, quail, cottontail rabbits, and fox squirrels making up the majority of the han•e There is very limited pheasant, waterfowl and deer hunting (with bow and arrow only) opportunity. There is also a limited amount of trapping for • furbearers and varmints in the riparian areas. ~ d. Public Usc Abstract: The area is open to wer all public use throughout the year. A nature trail has been constructed for non-consumptive users such as bird watcher and photographers, and draws a great number of people because of its pro- ximity to Colorado Springs. The area is heavily hunted throughout the small game seasons especially during dove and quail seasons. e. Agricultural Abstract: Approximately 800 acres of the area are suitable for farming. Plantings of small grains are necessary to maximize wildlife benefits. The lessor raises alfalfa and mixed grass hay, wheat, corn, milo and millet on a 32Z/68z basis. • MMP - 4-~?
