Vegetative Abstract: <br />There are three major vegetative zones on the management area: Irrigate <br />farm and pasture land; riparian; and rangeland. The riparian habitat lo- <br />cared on the east side is characterized by cottonwood and willow-tamaris:: <br />stands. The rangeland on the west side is characterized by shortgrass <br />prairie, yucca, cacti and sagebrush. The irrigated land varies with ware <br />availability but is made up mainly of corn, milo,wheat and alfalfa. <br />b. wildlife Abstract: <br />The primary game species are deer, cottontail rabbit, fox squirrel,~calz <br />• quail. bobwhite quail, ringnecked pheasant, mourning dove and waterfowl. <br />' Important varmints and furbearers include coyotes, red fox, raccoon,muskr~ <br />beaver, prairie dogs and bobcats. Nongame wildlife includes over 150 <br />species of i~r~s, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, most notably the Ark:,: <br />sas darter. <br />e. Harvest nbstrae[: <br />The area is primarily an upland game harvest site, with doves, quail, <br />cottontail rabbits, and fox squirrels making up the majority of the han•e <br />There is very limited pheasant, waterfowl and deer hunting (with bow and <br />arrow only) opportunity. There is also a limited amount of trapping for <br />• furbearers and varmints in the riparian areas. <br />~ d. Public Usc Abstract: <br />The area is open to wer all public use throughout the year. A nature <br />trail has been constructed for non-consumptive users such as bird watcher <br />and photographers, and draws a great number of people because of its pro- <br />ximity to Colorado Springs. The area is heavily hunted throughout the <br />small game seasons especially during dove and quail seasons. <br />e. Agricultural Abstract: <br />Approximately 800 acres of the area are suitable for farming. Plantings <br />of small grains are necessary to maximize wildlife benefits. The lessor <br />raises alfalfa and mixed grass hay, wheat, corn, milo and millet on a <br />32Z/68z basis. <br />• <br />MMP - 4-~? <br />
