Introduction
On May 22, 1990 approximately 2,000' of additional access was
surveyed for Peabody Coal Company's groundwater monitoring well
#A3. The well and access are located in the SE/SW of Section 11,
T5N, R88W, Routt County, Colorado. The new access starts on the
northwest side of the drainage across from the A3 well location,
travels southwest along the existing two-track for 800', crosses
the drainage and then backtracks to the northeast for 800' to A3.
This land is administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Little
Snake Resource Area in Craig, Colorado. Field work was completed
by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, inc. (MAC) employees
Kimberly Spurr and Scott Wails.
Methodology
Since this work was simply additional access for a previously
surveyed well site and access, no further Colorado file search or
literature review were required. Field methodology was similar to
that of the previous survey. An existing two-track road and the
newly proposed route were surveyed, since both of these areas will
probably be disturbed during construction of the well locations.
A corridor 50' wide and approximately 2,000' long was covered (2.3
acres).
• During fieldwork it was noted that the existing road is
misdrawn on the USGS topographic quadrangle (Mount Harris 1971).
The map shows the road running along the southeast side of the
drainage when in reality it runs along the northwest side. We have
drawn the actual route of the road on the enclosed map and this is
the access surveyed.
MAC was requested to continue southwest along the existing
two-track for approximately 400' which will be the access to a
proposed settling pond which has not yet been surveyed.
Results and Recommendations
No cultural resources or paleontological remains were found
during this additional survey, so cultural resource clearance is
recommended for the new access route.
MAC was also notified by Ted Smith of Peabody Coal that the
A6 well location will be right next to the S1 flume and also that
the access to Al will be the same as access to the S4 flume. These
areas (A6 and access to A1) are recommended for cultural resource
clearance because they both are located in previously surveyed
areas (S1 and access to 54).
