Management Summar
Dletcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC) has completed an
archaeological survey of nine groundwater monitoring well locations and
associated access in Routt County, Colorado. No cultural resources were
discovered and archaeological clearance is recommended for the following well
locations:
Well Number Leg al Location Quadrangle
Al SW/SW/NE Sec. 11, T5N, R88W Mount Harris
A2 NE/NW/SW Sec. 10, T5N, R88W Hayden
NE Sec. 9, T5N, R88W Hayden
A3 NE/SE/SW Sec. 11, T5N, R88W Mount Harris
A4 SW/NW/SW Sec. 13, TSN, R88W Mount Harris
A5 NW/SE/SW Sec. 8, T5N, R87W Mount Harris
A7 SE/NE/SW Sec. 16, T5N, R87W Mount Harris
A8 SE/NW/SE Sec. 20, T5N, R87w Dunckley
A9 SW/NW/NE Sec. 29, T5N, R87W Dunckley
61,62,63 NE/SE/NE Sec. 17, TSN, R87W M1tount Harris
A6/SI SE/SE/NE Sec. 16, T5N, R87W Mount Harris
Introduction
Peabody Coal Company of Flagstaff, Arizona contracted with t•:.-;C to conduct
a Class III survey of nine groundwater monitoring wells in Routt County,
Colorado. Peabody is proposing to build these monitoring wells and related
access to monitor groundwater in the area. The wells will be drilled either by
portable truck mounted augers or larger drills. In each location a 100' x 100'
area centered on the hole location was surveyed. Peabody officials Felt a 100'
x 100' area would be more than adequate for tl~e limited area of disturbance
associated with these well locations. Access routes are, for the most part very
limited in length. A 50' corridor was surveyed For access and these areas,
along with the individual well locations are shown in Figures 1-4. Well
locations Al and A3 are on BLD1 surface while the others are on private surface
owned by either Peabody Cosl or private individuals.
The main objective of this survey was to determine if significant cultural
resources would be impacted by Peabody's proposed drilling sites end related
access. Due to the small area of disturbance involved with the well locations,
and the limited access, the chance of finding cultural resources was seen as
slight, although possible. Further, with projects of this limited scale,
avoidance of cultural resources is generally a viable option. No cultural
resources were discovered at any of these well locations or along any of the
access routes, although one access route, to well A2, near Dry Creek passes by
a previously recorded rock-art site. The project will not impact this
potentially significant site.
This survey was completed on May 9 and 10, 1990 by Ronald J. Rood and
Kimberly Spurr of MAC. All field notes and other information pertaining to this
project are filed at the MAC office in Eagle, Colorado.
Environmental Data
The entire project area is located within tl~e Southern Rocky h1ountains
Physiographic Province. Locally, vegetation is primarily sagebrush and
