In attendance
were Steve Bennett and Mike Albee, BLM, and myself. Areas of concern
were defined as elk calving grounds, critical winter range for elk, sage
grouse leks, and nesting golden eagles.
BLM maps delineated both critical winter range and calving grounds for
elk in the area, neither of which transected the Yoast properties. Mike
suggested that these particular issues were of no concern at this time
with exploration drilling commencing on or after 1 July 1988.
One sage grouse lek located in NE!~ of Section 6, north of Peabody's
Yoast properties was mapped by BLM with a one mile buffer zone established
• around the display ground. This buffer zone does not intercept the Yoast
C properties boundary.
BLM maps indicated three golden eagle nests in the NW's SE'4 of Section 7.
These nests are beyond the one-half mile line of sight buffer zone stipulated
by BLM. One additional nest in the NWZ SE`L of Section 18 was shown on the
BLM map. This nest could not be located during the survey on 18 May 1988.
Mike indicated data on [his nest was collected in 1981 and the nest may no
longer be active. Sim Haskins, CDOId, suggested eagle mortality in this area
to be high due to sweep rancher/golden eagle antagonisms.
No species listed as threatened or endangered was encountered on the
properties. A complete list of species observed during the survey is
attached.
AF/bb
r ,
U
