• VEGETATION SUMMARY
SENECA II-W AREA
Vegetation
At elevations of around 6000-8000 feet, the following general types occur in the drilling
area: Aspen, Mountain Brush, and Sagebrush-grass. Briefly, these types may be described
as:
Sagebrush-grass - Types occurring on lower slopes and ridges dominated by low shrubs and
big sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata); other species include snowberry (Symphorocarpos ~)
and forbs such as arrowleaf balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata), lupines (Lupines sue),
clover (T rifolium), spring parsley, and pa ririe onion (A71ium textile). Grasses make up a
small percent of the total herbage.
Mountain Brush - This is a major group on sandier soils, north and east slopes, and high
ridges. Species include gambell oak (Ouercus gambelli), chokecherry (Prunes virginiana),
Saskatoon se rviceberry (Amelanchier al nifolia). Forbs include starwort (Stellaria
• cra ssifolia), western yellow (Achilles lanulosa), larkspur (Delphinium sp), and Fendler
meadowrue (Thalictrum fendleri ). Some grasses and sedges occur also.
Aspen types - Occur on higher northfacing slopes or in pockets where snow collects, seeps
provide additional moisture on protected perennial stream drainages at lower elevations.
Forbs occur such as angelica (Angelica ~), false hellebore (Veratrum californi cum),
Columbine (Aqui legia sue), and delphinium. Grasses such as mountain brome may occur in
patches.
Stony, rocky areas may have a mixture of brush, types, grasses, and forbs including
gambell oak, true mountainmahogany (Cercocarpus montanus), fringed sagewort (Artemesia
f ri gida), broom snakeweed (Gutierrezia saroth rae), a number of forbs and such grasses as
Indian ri cegrass (Ory zopsis hymenoides), bluebunch wheatgrass (Agropyron spicatum), and
Basin wildrye (E l}~mus cinereus ).
Wildlife usage of these areas and grazing of cattle are the two major uses of the land
area not being mined.
