EXECUTIVE SUr41dARY
A soil survey was conducted on the Western Fuels-Utah, Inc. Deserado permit area
during the summer and fall of 1980. The total area surveyed was about 5,500 acres.
Soils ware surveyed, mapped, analyzed and evaluated in accordance with sta g
and federal guidelines and the National Cooperative Soil Survey standards.
fhirty-two map units were delineated on the survey area. Approximately 15 backhoe
pits were dug during field observations. Typical profiles ware described and
soil samples were obtained from these pits. Upon receipt of laboratory data,
the soils were evaluated and placed in four classes. Lhe purpose was to classify
the soils by suitability and depth.
•
iiost of the surface and subsurface soil horizons rated fair to good as a source
of topsoil material. Within the area to ba stripped of topsoil, =sti.mates snow
that when all suitable topsoil material is stripped there will be enough material
to replace a layer of about 4 to 24 inches in average thickness over the affected
areas. This soil depth range reflects existing differential distribution of depths
with shallowest replacement depths occurring along transportation corridors on
ridgetops.
•
