<br />study area is dissected by a dendritic pattern of intermittent drainages. These <br />and other minor drainages start at the edge of the foothill ridges and then trend <br />toward major drainages in the small valleys between ridges. Major intermittent <br />drainages are Scullion Gulch draining the southwest portion and Red Wash draining <br />the remainder. <br />a. CLIMATE <br />The climate is semi-arid with an estimated annual precipitation of 10 to 14 <br />inches. Strong winds pr avail during the fall, spring and early summer seasons. <br />Su;nmers are short, cool and dry with considerable diurnal variation. The <br />frost-free season is about 100 to 130 days. t4inters are long and cold, generally <br />• open but with frequent blizzard conditions. Thz soil temperature regime is <br />borderline between mesic and frigid. <br />b. GEOLJGY AND TOPJGRAPHY <br />Within the permit area only one major surface geologic for,nation is reported. <br />'This is the Williams Fork Formation of the Mesa Verde group which makes up the <br />surficial strata in this portion of the White River Basin. The ailliams ForK <br />Formation is generally described as alternating fluvial beds of yellow to light <br />gray sandstone and gray to gray brown shale, siltstone and claystone.
