~:
•
NATURAL SETTING
The study area is primarily located on the southern slopes of the
Williams Fork Mountains overlooking the Yampa River to the northwest.
Physlographically, this area is semi-arid, characterized by rolling
hills and broad river valleys along the Yampa River. To the south of
the Williams Fork Mountains, the area is characterized by deep canyons
flanked by thick sandstone escarpments.
The surveyed area is located immediately southwest of the town of
Craig, Colorado. Craig is situated on the youngest and the second
youngest floodplains on the north side of the Yampa river. This
region is characterized by cretaceous sedimentary rocks with the
Mancos shale strata flooring the river valley while the Mesaverde
Group of sandstone and shale are exposed to the north and south of
Craig. It is within this Mesaverde stratigraphic group that the
Utah International Trapper Coal Mine complex is located (Figure 4).
UTAH INTERNATIONAL, TRAPPER COAL MINE COMPLEX.
