• In a report entitled Archaeological Reconnaissance of Proposed
Coal Lease Areas in Afoffat, Rio Blanco, and Routt Counties, Colorado
Arthur and Jennings describe the vegetation of the area in which this
survey was conducted. Arthur and Jennings discuss three main vegetation
units: The Grassland, Mountain Shrub, and intermediate Sagebrush com-
munities.
The Grassland communities generally consist of small meadow areas
and present favorable conditions for the growth of wheatgrasses,
bluegrasses, bromegrasses, and needlegrasses. These usually occur
in the bottoms of the wider drainages and small valleys (1977: 4-5).
Within the present survey area, the larger drainage bottoms on the south-
ern slopes of the Williams Fork Mountains, such as Ute Gulch, are part of
the Grassland communities.
•
VIEW OF UTE GULCH TAKEN FROM THE EDGE OF THE MEADOW
LOOKING SOUTH.
In the northern portion of the survey area the topography is much less
rugged. The Grassland communities are in broad, shallow valleys flanked
by rolling hills.
•
12
