<br /> <br />POST FSTAIIISSHk~NT MANAGF74ENT <br />Many reclamation efforts are unsuccessful for lack of continuing management. <br />Reclamation plantings often require two or more years to maintain themselves. <br />The following items should be included in a follow-up management plan: <br />1. Fencing - One break in a fence will destroy its usefulness. <br />Grazing moat be deferred for at least two years after establishment; <br />feats maintenance is a must. <br />2. Mulching - The planting must be examined periodically to determine <br />if the mulching medium is intact. Mulch is sometimes needed for <br />two or three years after planting. <br />3, Peed control - Preparing a site for reclamation planting also pre- <br />pares the site for competing and perhaps undesirable weed species. <br />Meed competition may prolong the establishment period. <br />4. Supplemental water - If supplemental eater is used, maintenance of <br />the systems must be included in management. <br />5, Planting evaluation - Although not generally part of a post-estab- <br />lishmeat mnagementFlen, all plantings should be evaluated to gain -• <br />information that would be useful in subsequent reclamation pro~ecta. <br />6. Reseeding - Area where seeding has failed because of weed takeover, <br />drought, blorout, overgrazing or any other reason will be reseeded. <br />The renovation area should be disked and weeds controlled, then re- <br />seeded with the original seed mis and mulched. <br />~. Proper Gazing Use - If the area is to be grazed, a minimum of two <br />yenta or until the stand ie well established is required. Vhen <br />grazing, at least half of the current years growth will be left on <br />the area. <br />$. Soil testing - Monitoring of the soil fertility is needed to insure <br />that enough plant nutrients are available for stand maintenance or <br />improvement. <br />9. Fertilization - Application of fertilizer according to soil test <br />results will insure stand maintenance. <br />10. Maintenance of structural practices - Practices installed for erosion <br />control and protection of areas will be maintained to insure proper <br />operation and to extend the usefulness of the practice. <br />11. Correction and control of unforeseen problems - When nee problems <br />develop the situation rill be corrected or controlled ao rapidly <br />as possible. <br />
