~ ~.
B. MAJOR USES AND INTERPRETATIONS FOR
1. Livestock Grazinu

•
Page 5 M232
a. This site is fragile and extreme care
avoid overgrazing. Most of this site has
damaged from continuous selective grazing.
should be exercised to
already been severely
A system of deferred grazing, which varies the season of grazing
use in pastures during successive years, is needed to maintain a
healthy well-balanced plant community. Additionally, cattle
should be allowed .o move frequently enough to prevent extended
periods of grazing during growins season. Rotation back to a
previously grazed site should be deferred for a long enough period
to allow grazed plants to recover. Early spring deferment would
benefit western wh~atgrass, Indian ricegrass, and needleandthread
most. Summer deferment would benefit all grasses, but especially
blue grama.
b. Guide to Initial Stocking Rates
(1) Stocking rates given below are based on continuous use for
the entire growing season, and are intended only as an initial
guide. Forage needs are calcula=ed on the basis of 900 Ibs of
air-dry forage per animal unit month (AUM). To maintain proper
use and allow for =orage that disappears through trampling, small
herbivore use, weathering, etc., 35 percent of the palatable
forage produced is considered available for grazing by large
herbivores.
Condition Percent Climax
Class Vegetation Ac/AUM AUM/Ac
excellent 76-100 8 0.12
good 51- 75 10 0.10
fair 26- 50 17 0.06
poor 0- 25 25 0.04
(2) Adjustments t~ the initial stocking rates should be made as
needed to obtain proper use. Wish specialized grazing systems,
large livestock broads, uncontro9led big game herbivores,
inaccessability, dormant season use, presence of introduced
species, etc., stocking rate adjustments will be required.
c.
