brown (101'R 5/3) when moist; massive; slightly hard,
firm; sticky and plastic; calcareous; few', fine, rounded
The A horizon is silt loam to clay loam 3 to 8 inches thick.
The B2t horizon ranges from clay to silty cla}• loam 17 to
32 inches thick. The lower part of the B horizon ranges
from moderately alkaline to strongly alkaline, Some profiles
arc as much as 15 percent gravel.
11Ioll-illattzanola clay loam, 2 to 0 percent slopes.
This soil is on colluvial slopes below escarpments of
limestone or shale in the western part of the survey
area and at the foot of mesas in the northeastern part.
The areas cover as much as 400 acres. This soil has
a profile similar to the mle described as representative
of the series, but the surface layer is grayish brown,
and the subsoil is very plastic. Also, in the nm'theastern
part of the survey area the surface layer and upper
part of the subsoil are as much as 15 percent gravel.
Included with this soil in mapping are areas of
blanvcl silt loam that make up about I5 percent of the
aCi'Cage.
Runoff is moderate, and the hazard of erosion is
moclcratc.
This soil is well suited to grazing. The native vegeta-
titnl is mainly western wheatgrass, blue grama, and
fourwing saltbush. The potential for improving the
range cover is good. Capability unit VIe-1, nwt-
irrigated; Loam}' Plains range site.
I1IpA-Dlanzanola silty clay loam, 0 to 2 percent
slopes. This sail is on deeply dissected fans and ter-
races. The areas are irregular in shape and cover as
much as 300 acres. This soil has the profile described
as representative of the series.
Included with this soil in mapping are areas of Haver-
son silt loam and Haverson fine sandy loam that make
up as much as 15 percent of the acreage.
Runoff is slow, and the hazal•d of erosion is moder-
ate. Gully headcutting is a hazard. The soil is subject
to rare or occasional brief flooding received as nmoff
from adjacent higher areas.
This soil is well suited to grazing. The native vegeta-
tion is mainly foul•vving saltbush, western wheatgrass,
biue grama, and galleta. The potential for improving
23
the range cover is good. Capability emit VIvv-2, tlon-
irrigated; Saline Ovel•Rovv range site.
Midway Series
The bIidvvay series consists of shallow, well-drained
soils. These soils formed on uplands in clayey residuum
that vvas derived mostly from shale. They are ]tndel•-
lain by soft shale at a depth of 8 to 20 inches. The
slope is 1 to 0 pel•cent, and elevatiotl is 4,400 to 5,800
feet. The average annual pl•ecipitation is 12 inches.
The average annual tenlperatul•e is 53° F, and the
frost-free season is 145 to 175 days. The ]]alive vegeta-
tion is mainly plains grasses.
In a representative profile the surface layer is
grayish-brown silty clay about 2 inches thick. The
undel'lyillg material is light bl'ovvnish-gl•ay silty clay
about 7 inches thick. Soft shale is a depth of about 0
inches.
Permeabilit}• is slow, and the available ivatet•
capacity is very lov:. These soils are moderately alkaline
to strongly alkaline. Their root zmte extends to a depth
of 9 to 20 inches. They are used for grazing.
Representative profile of Midway silty clay, in an
area of Midway-Shale outcrop complex, 1 to 9 percent
slopes, in grass, 0.45 mile east and 0.15 mile south of
the northwest corner of sec. 26, T. 26 S., R. 60 1V.
A-0 to 2 inches, grayish-brown (2.5Y 5/2) silty clay', dark
grayish brown (2.5Y 9/2) when moist; moderate, very
fine, granular structure; soft, friable; stick}• and plas-
tic; moderately alkaline; abrupt, smooth boundary.
Cl-2 to 9 inches, light brox•nish-Bray (2.5Y G/2) silty clay,
olive brown (2.51' 4/A) when moist; massive; slightly
hard, firm; sticky and plastic; calcareous; moderately
alkaline; abrupt, smooth boundary.
C2-0 inches, calcareous, soft shale.
The soil ranges from clay' to silty clay loam. Depth to
shale range; from S to 20 inches.
1115D-11Iid}vay-Shale outcrop complex, 1 l0 0 percent
slopes. Tllis complex is in all but the fol•estecl .pal•ts
of the survey area. It is made up of about 50 percent
DIidvvay silt>• clay and 40 percent Shale outcrop. Areas
of this complex are irregular in shape and cover as
mach as 40 acl'es.
The IVlidway soil in this complex has the profile
described as representative of the Ivlitlway series.
Included }eith these soils in mapping are areas of
Razor clay loam that make up about 10 percent of the
acreage.
Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of erosion is high.
This Midway soil is better suited to grazing than to
other uses. The native grass is mainly galleta, but
alkali sacaton, western wheatgrass, and blue grama
at•e common. In places the shale contains the mineral
selenium, which is absw'bed by some native plants.
These plants are poisonous and, if eaten in large quanti-
ties, are hat•mfu] to livestock. Capability unit VIIs-1,
nonirrigated; Shaly Plains range site.
illinnequa Series
The Ivlitlnegtta series consists of model•ately deep,
well-drained soils. These soils formed on uplands in
silty- residuum weathered from limestone. The slope
is 1 to 3 percent, and elevation is 4,400 to 5,800 feet.
