1
USDA United States Natural Resources Siml~ .field Office
~~ Department of Conservation 325 Pueblo Avenue
' Agriculture Service PO Box 188
(NRCS) Simla, CO 80835
' Telephone: 719541-2358 http:/lwww.co.nres.usda.gov fax: 719541-3061
June 12, 2000
' John Atwater
Simla County Road and Bridge
809 Ute Ave
' Simla, CO 80835
Subject: Allison Gravel Pit Site
' NW4 sec 2, T 10, R 59
' Dear John
I have examined the proposed Allison gravel pit site located in the NW4 of
section 2, Township 105, Range 59W on June 6, 2000. The Allison site is
' currently native rangeland with a draw along the easC side. Plants presently
growing include blue grama, western wheatgrass, green needle, red three awn,
sun sedge and a few yucca.
' Please consider the following recommendations for reclamation
.
The Allison site is located south of Matheson on soil type Yoder-Truckton-
t Lismas complex, 3 to 15 percent slopes, map unit is Yt. Capability group is
VIS - soils generally unsuitable for cultivation and limited for other uses
by low moisture capacity, stones or other features. This is a Gravelly
Outwash range site. Native plant community on this site consists of 85-900
' grasses, 5$ forbs and 5-10$ shrubs. Vegetation is mainly cool and warm-season
grasses.
Topsoiling: The current topsoil should be removed and reserved to be used for
reclamation. Topsoil should be spread uniformly over' the disturbed area to a
packed depth of 6 inches. This should be 8" - 10" over exposed bedrock. In
' event that existing soils have insufficient depth, Copsoil shall be brought
in and spread over the deficient areas.
Sita Preparation: Reclamation of the pit should be made by smoothing all
banks to no more that 2:1 slopes and should be flatter where feasible and
t practicable. The topography should be made smooth with no spoil piles or pits
present.
t Grass Seedinq: Area being reseeded should be treated as a critical area
planting. When area is being reclaimed by broadcasting rather than drilled,
the rates computed shall be doubled to meet seeding recommendations. The
seedbed should be well settled and firm but friable for seed placement. Soils
' that have been over-compacted by equipment should b~ tilled to break up
rooting restrictive layers, then harrowed, rolled or packed to prepare the
required firm seedbed. Grasses should be drilled using a grass drill from
November 1~t - April 30`h prior to a period of anticipated moisture and after
all other treatment is completed. Recommended planting depth is 'h" to '/+". See
the attached seeding recommendation (CO-eCS-S) for species amount and variety
' to use.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service works hantl-in-hantl wim
' the American people to conserve natural resources an private lantls AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY PROVIDER AND EMPLOYER
