• SOIL MAPPING UNIT - OLNEY-PROGRESSO SANDY LOAMS <br />PP - Olney-Progresso sandy loans, 3 to 15 percent slopes. This map unit <br />is on uplands. The native vegetation is mainly grass, pinyon, and <br />juniper. Elevation is 6,200 to 7,000 feet. The average annual <br />precipitation is 14 to 17 inches, the average annual air temperature is <br />48 to 52 degrees F., and the average frost-free period is 100 to 130 <br />days. <br />This unit is about 45 percent Olney sandy loam and about 35 percent <br />Progresso sandy loam. The Olney soil is on the gently sloping areas, <br />and the Progresso soil is on the steeper ridges. <br />Included in this unit are small areas of Louviers cobbly clay loam and <br />Travessilla sandy loam on ridges. These soils are shallow to shale and <br />sandstone, respectively. Also included are small areas of sandstone <br />Rock outcrop on ridges. <br />• <br />The Olney soil is deep and well drained. It formed in calcareous eolian <br />material. Typically, the surface layer is brown sandy loam about 4 <br />inches thick. The subsoil is sandy clay loam about 22 inches thick. <br />The substratum to a depth of 60 inches or more is sandy loam. The soil <br />is neutral to a depth of 4 inches, mildly alkaline to a depth of 26 <br />inches, and moderately alkaline below that depth. <br />Permeability of the Olney soil is moderate. Available water capacity ie <br />moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is <br />medium to rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is high to very high. <br />The Progresso soil is moderately deep and well drained. It formed in <br />residuum derived dominantly from sandstone. Typically, the surface <br />layer is brown sandy loam about S inches thick. The subsoil is sandy <br />clay loam about 10 inches thick.
