RE: Quarterly Discharge Monitoring Report for Permit CO-0000221
Dear Sir or Madam:
Pursuant to. the quarterly reporting requirements contained in
Colorado Discharge Permit CO-0000221 for the Seneca. Mine Complex,
enclosed find the third quarter 2001 discharge monitoring .reports.
for Sites 002 to 006 and 008 to 017. In this. quarter,
intermittent discharges occurred at Points 005, 011; 012, and
015, while no discharges occurred at Point 009. Points 013 and
017 have not been constructed yet. Construction of Pond 014 was .
completed this September, no discharge has occurred yet:
Point 003 experienced an excursion of the 30-day average.total
suspended solids (TSS) limit of 35 mg/1 with a value of 38 mg/1
measured from a sample collected September 12. A retest of the
September 12 sample performed on.: October 10 resulted in a
measured TSS value of only 8 mg/1. Field notes recorded at the
time of sampling indicated that this sample. contained a high
concentration of algae. I suspect that it was this high algae
concentration that resulted in this high TSS value. The October
10 retest value seems to indicate that this may be the case. TSS
values at this point were 12 mg/1 in July, 30 mg/1 in August
(also high in algae), and < 5 mg/1 in October.
