EVALUATION OF POTENTIAL IMPACTS
TO WETLAND ON THE SAGE HILL FARM FROM THE
PROPOSED NIX PROPERTY
SAND AND GRAVEL OPERATION
INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE
This report presents the results of an evaluation of potential effects of aggregate mining at the
proposed Nix property sand and gravel operation ("Nix property") on the wetland located
immediately to the south on the Sage Hill Farm. A vicinity map of the project azea, which shows
the subject wetland, is included as Figure 1.
This evaluation was conducted based on review of existing information, observations of the
study area and subject wetland, and collection of additional data. An evaluation of potential
effects of the operation on groundwater and nearby vt~ater wells was also conducted, and is
included in a separate report by Wright Water Engineers, Ina (WWE). "
The initial proposal by Owens Brothers Concrete Company (Owens) was for dry mining with
dewatering. However, due to concerns expressed by neighbors, Owens revised its plans to
perform wet mining. Therefore, the potential effects of wet mining on the wetland are evaluated
in this report. In addition, measures to mitigate potential impacts from the operation aze
presented.
STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION
The Nix property is located in the E%s of SE'/< and S'/z of the SW'/< of Section 28, T3N, R67W in
Weld County (Figure 1). The site consists of approximately 320 acres of irrigated agricultural
land.
The Last Chance Ditch flows in a northeasterly direction immediately to the west of the Nix
property. Laterals from the ditch traverse agricultural fields azound the Nix property. The Side
Hill Ditch and several laterals serve the Sage Hill Farm to the south. An irrigation pond exists on
the Mayer property immediately to the east of the Sage Hill Farm and subject wetland. This
011-074.000 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
