3
• scooulorum). fambel oak (Quercus gambelii) was a major shrub species,
occurring with mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) and snowberry
(Symphoricarpos oreophilus). Plumerous annual and perennial forbs and
grasses occurred as understory vegetation, including cinquefoil
(Potentilla concinna), Ca re x. spp. side-oats grama (Bouteloua
curtipendula), and June-grass (Y.oeleria cristata). The soils occur-
ring in this type were a light brown sandy loam. Ponderosa pine,
Douglas fir and Gambel oak were showing good reproduction. Understory
was sparse under the older conifers where there was dense litter.
The Ponderosa pine-oak vegetation type occurred on a north-
facing slope of about 27o with an elevation of 7500 ft. It was charac-
terized by pure stands of Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) interspersed
with patches of Gambel oak ( uercus gambelii). Other overstory spe-
• ties were pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Rocky Fountain juniper
(Juniperus scopulorum). Other shrub species were snowberry
(Symphoricarpos oreophilus) and mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus
montanus). Understory species consisted of annual and perennial
forbs and grasses such as Carex sp., Parry oatgrass (Danthonia arryi),
side-oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula), blue grama (Bouteloua
gracilis), cinquefoil (Potentilla concinna), star gentian (Swertia
radiata), and Fendler.meadowrue (Thalictrum fen dleri). Openings in
the tree canopy were dominated by Gambei oak and occasional stands
of mountain mahogany. Parry oatgrass farmed tussocks in the openings.
The soil v,as a light brown sandy loam.
The willow carr vegetation type v+as located in a drainage of
the Purgatoire River at an elevation of approximately 7400 ft.
