INTRODUCTIOP!
The CF&I Steel Corporation operates two underground coal mines
35 miles west of Trinidad, Colorado. The two mines are the Maxwell
Mine and the Allen Pine, each on separate permit areas. The Allen
Cline is approximately 5 miles northwest of the Max~•~ell Kline.
Disturbed areas on the Maxwell Mine include grassland and
pinyon-juniper vegetation types, while areas to be disturbed on the
Allen Kline include Ponderosa pine-Douglas fir-oak, Ponderosa pine-
oak, and willow carr vegetation types. A species list for these
vegetation types is given in Appendix B.
• s Representative areas of each vegetation type were inventoried
for vegetation cover and production by major species and species
categories. Density of trees, shrubs and saplings in each type was
also obtained. The results of the inventory ;vere used to identify
dominant species in each type and discuss the relationships of the
dominant species with their environment.
The general vegetation types were mapped on a scale of 1:500.
These maps can be found in Appendix C.
• .
