III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Janet Binns of CDMG. The Grassy Gap mine is a reclaimed surface
mine. The mine permit and reclamation liability bond have been revoked by DMG. Site maintenance and
repairs to Pit 4 road, Pond 4, and Pit 2/3 road were conducted by DMG in October 1999
Signs & Markers : DMG informational signs remain at switchback to Pit 4 road and intersection between Pit
2/3 road and Pit 5/6 road.
Roads: The road to Pit 4 is in fair condition. The lowermost rolled dip across the road is ponding water at the
northeast portion of the dip. The rolled dip was designed to direct runoff to the southeast to drain runoff off the
roadway. The roadway downslope of the rolled dip is holding up all right. The gully at the inside of the Pit 4
road switchback does not appear to be actively headcutting. Water was flowing down the north side of this
switchback. Inspector dug some of the sediment out and tried to get flow moving to the south side of the road.
The access road to Pit 5 and 6 remains in good condition. Water was bypassing some of the rip rapped ditch at
pi[ 5 but not eroding [he road very much.
Access roads to Pits 2/3 and Pit I were impassible due to snowdrifts.
Hydrologic Balance: Pit 4 pond contained water approx. 3 feet below primary spillway. Riser is cut off a[
embankment height. Pond is not discharging.
Pond 5 was discharging. Side slopes of Pond 5 show no recent movement.
Revegetation:. Grasses are greening up. Vegetation appeared in fair to good condition. No livestock was on the
mine area. Porcupine was observed near Pond 5.
Slides: No new slide areas were observed. Previously documented slides do not appear to have moved
measurably this spring.
